Willamette View

Retirement Community

Wellness Profile
Technogym had a chance to talk with Jay Ego, Wellness Director of Willamette View, a nationally recognized and accredited continuing care retirement community focused on senior wellness programming. Here is what Mr. Ego had to say about his experience with Technogym.

Why did you choose Technogym? Around 1999 I saw Technogym at IHRSA and was very impressed with the technology. When I joined Willamette View we talked about fitness equipment possibilities and Technogym was at the top of the list. Once our CEO Jim Mertz, heard about the equipment’s potential he did not want to hear about the others, he said we need the best.

Which equipment features have generated attraction and retention? Some of the features that are particularly beneficial to residents include the easily adjustable seats, bio feedback, range of motion, speed of movement, tracking of repetitions and storing of data. What better scenario can you find for this kind of community? There really isn’t. The Wellness System is also one of the big attractions at our Wellness Center.
This system really removes barriers. Our residents don’t have to carry around charts and pencils to track their progress. If they have walkers or canes it would be impossible to get on the equipment carrying these things.
Now all they need is their Smart Key. Once we got Technogym our workouts tripled. We wondered if we were ahead of our time by having older adults work with technology but in the end our residents were more intrigued than fearful. Now they get instant gratification from their results and they want their credit for the program accomplishments.

How has Technogym helped improve business? Our Wellness Center and the Wellness System sets us apart from the competition and is a major factor in attracting new residents. They are excited about the programs we offer and adhere to their exercise regimes better. In March we had our second highest participation month since the opening in February 2007. We hosted 2,283 workouts, 817 Technogym workouts, 562 pool workouts and 904 class workouts. We use the Wellness System to track progress and test for a new base line twice a year, with this we deliver a much better service. We also have a “Million Pound Club” our residents are always looking to see their progress on the wall. We have 50 residents who lifted over 1 million pounds and our top performer is an 84 year old man lifting 22 million pounds. The average age of these participants is 86 years old. We use the Wellness System to follow this club. The ease of tracking data is much improved over trying to do it manually. Having the Wellness System is worth more than 2-3 full time employees and even then, we would not be serving our residents like we do now. It is a huge cost save in the end.
General thoughts about Technogym: Technogym really is the best equipment for this market.
