How's Work Sound Like ?
The percentage of working people 75 and older jumped—from 4.7 to 7.3 percent—in the last decade, in great part due to the housing slump and economic recession, says a Wall Street Journal report. These individuals are likely future residents of assisted living communities that follow the affordable model.
The increasing number of 75+ seniors in the workforce also is reflected in the number of unemployed workers in this age group—more than 73,000 in January—up 46 percent since the prior January. Among workers 65 and older, the jobless rate is 5.7 percent, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The paper also notes that several states are developing pilot programs to help older unemployed workers, and that the Obama administration is receiving proposals for new ways to connect workers 55 years and older with local jobs.
