Assisted living remains enormously popular among seniors and their families, according to key benchmarks released in a new national survey conducted by ALFA and other organizations who support resident-centered care. The 2009 Overview of Assisted Living also reveals the industry’s latest data on occupancy rates, resident demographics, and much more.
Other highlights from the 2009 Overview of Assisted Living:
The average age of residents continues to rise and female residents outnumber male residents by a 3-to-1 margin. The median age is now 86.9 years.
The median income of an assisted living resident is $18,972 – a slight increase from the 2006 Overview.
More than one third of assisted living residents have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or some other form of dementia.
The 2009 Overview is a most comprehensive industry study that provides core national metrics about the assisted living customer and serves as a valuable statistical resource for senior housing providers, policymakers, regulators, consumers, consumer advocates, and health-care professionals. Plus, the report speaks to the standards of operational excellence in assisted living.“The high standards and commitment to quality embraced by the assisted living industry have made assisted living a trusted option for America’s seniors,” says Richard Grimes, ALFA’s president and CEO. “Our members have led the way on the philosophy of care which allows seniors to age with dignity, grace, and independence.”
